Sien (19) develops app to order sandwiches at school

As a student, 19-year-old Sien De Vriese from Asse was annoyed by the way she had to order a sandwich at her school - the Don Bosco Institute in Groot-Bijgaarden. From that frustration, she developed the Sendwich application with which she wants to facilitate external school lunch orders. The first school to use the app is, yes, her old secondary school.

The young entrepreneur came up with Sendwich during her final project for Social Engineering. "I have just come from school myself and know how unstructured and old-fashioned ordering a sandwich can be at school. Students spend an entire playtime impatiently queuing to order sandwiches. School staff must process long, handwritten lists, and delivery often goes wrong. The Sendwich app offers a solution to those problems," says Sien De Vriese.

Sendwich brings three parties onto one platform: the sandwich store, the school and the student. The school coordinates the platform. The Don Bosco School in Groot-Bijgaarden is the first school to use Sendwich. "Thanks to the ordering app, we can save a lot of valuable time. It is very good that the school plays an active role. For example, we make a selection from the full range of suppliers. Thus, the available menu corresponds to our guidelines for healthy eating," says school organization director Bert Vermaanen.

Despite the fact that the corona crisis makes entrepreneurship unpredictable, Sien is confident about her application. Through market research, she knows that 140 schools are actively looking for a smooth, digital solution to order sandwiches. "I developed the app out of annoyance for the long queues, but in times of COVID19 it is a perfect alternative to queuing and paying with cash or receipts. This reduces the risk of contamination. I am also very happy that through Sendwich we are helping to keep local sandwich stores running," concludes Sien.
